Heart's A Mess

5 “Cock-struck.” Smooches!!

When it came to mixing penises with emotions, I couldn’t be trusted

Lena, with a freshly broken heart, happens to be at the right place, at the right time and lands a job as the personal assistant/babysitter to the lead singer of Stage Dive, Jimmy Ferris.  Yes babysitter.  Who better to watch the band’s pretty boy-trouble maker- rock God than a girl scorned with a sassy mouth, great sense of humor, and a chip on her shoulder?

Jimmy is a Grade-A asshole.  He is a recovering addict and a requirement for him to remain in the band is to stay clean.  He has to have someone with him 24/7 to help him refuse the many temptations that come with his job.  None of his assistants have worked out... until Lena.  He treats her like crap, but she gives it right back to him and it is exactly what he needs.

“…sometimes, when you’re not being a jerk, I like you so much it hurts.”

After months spent together, Lena begins to care for Jimmy.  But nothing will run him off faster than declarations of love and feelings.

He was my Romeo in black jeans and this story had just as much a chance of dying as tragic a death as the original.

Jimmy is incapable of love but he can’t lose Lena.  He is determined to help her get over these “feelings.” He wants to keep her without hurting her.

Our time together would come to an end.  I couldn’t stop loving him, and he refused to start.  That was the cold hard truth.

OMG I LOVED this book.  Jimmy and Lena are the perfect blend of funny and serious.   Watching them battle their feelings was hilarious at times and heartbreaking at others.  You cannot help but love these two.

An arm shot out, wrapping around my neck, pulling me in against him. His whole body trembled.

“You okay?” I asked.

A nod.

“Feeling a little emotional, huh?” I petted his hair.

“That’s okay. It was an emotional blow job.”

That's some funny shit right there.  But there is a softer side even to Jimmy.  He has no clue how much he cares for Lena.  He is confused.  He is angry.  He is lost.

“Don’t hate me Lena…  You want to be mad at me when I do dumb things, that’s fine.  But don’t ever hate me.  I couldn’t take that, not from you.”
*le sigh*

4.5 Smooches

"Sometimes things that make the least sense
 are the most true."

Lead is the third installment in Kylie Scott's amazing Stage Dive series.  It centers on the band's lead singer, Jimmy Ferris.  If you are new to the series, don't fret .... Lead can be read as a stand alone.  Sure, you will want to go back and read the first two books, Lick and Play, immediately but shame on you if you let the fact that you haven't read the first two books keep you away.

Jimmy is fighting for his sobriety.  His label requires him to have a "sobriety" buddy in tow but he has trouble finding one that sticks.  Enter Lena Morrisey.  She meets Jimmy and the gang just as she is getting fired from her job.  Her sass and attitude lead Mal (Jimmy's bandmate) to believe she'd  be the perfect sobriety companion for Jimmy.  And so it begins ....

The story is told from Lena's POV so we know from day one she is containing her attraction to Jimmy.
"What happened between my legs was best ignored.  I'm certain something in the employment contract outlawed any and all wetness on my part, especially if it pertained to one James Dylan Ferris." - Lena
The more time they spend together, her attraction grows from physical to so much more.  So much so that she decides it is no longer wise to work for him and tenders her resignation.  You see, Lena has THE WORST luck when it comes to men  ...
"When it came to mixing penises with emotions, I couldn't be trusted."  - Lena
and in an attempt to be smarter, she decides leaving is better than enduring another heart break.

Jimmy refuses to accept her notice because she has proven to be the perfect fit for his sobriety companion ... or is she really the perfect fit for his heart?

Gah!!!!  Every time I read a new Stage Dive novel, I can't decide if I have a new favorite!!!  I absolutely LOVED Lead.  After reading Lick and Play, I wasn't terribly excited to go into Jimmy and Lena's story.  He just seemed like an arse and she just seemed pissed off and bitchy but let me tell you .... they are nothing like that in Lead.  Yeah, Jimmy is a jerk a lot of the time but Lead shows a side to him that just about any girl can fall in love with.  And Lena .... girl next door with crazy spunk is hard not to fall for.  And, yes, the Stage Dive gang is back!!!!  More Mal, Dave, and Ben!!!!  Woot!!!

Lead is the perfect addition to the Stage Dive series.  Yes, it is funny and light-hearted but it is packed with angst that reeled me in from the first page!  Kylie somehow manages to top herself with each new book in the series and I can't wait for Ben's book!!!!

Excerpt:
“Lena, you seen my old black Led Zep shirt?”
“Nope.”
“You sure?” His brows became one dark cranky line. The scratches on his face were healing well, thank goodness. Though it didn’t reduce my desire to throttle his mother on a daily basis.
“Yes. I haven’t seen it.”
Can’t find it anywhere…”
“And this is a surprise, how?” I slipped my hands into my back jean’s pockets. “Jimmy, you own more clothing than Cher, Brittney, and Elvis, put together. Things are bound to go missing.”
“Sure you haven’t seen it?”
“For goodness sake, what do you think, Jimmy? That I stole it to sleep in or something?” I laughed bitterly. Sure as hell, the truth deserved a good mocking. I’d sunk so despicably low.
I hadn’t even meant to steal the stupid thing, but the shirt had been mixed up with my laundry a few days ago. It’d been the first top I laid my hand on after stepping out of the shower, ready to go to bed. Without thought, I’d put it on and it’d been so soft, the scent of him lingering beneath the laundry detergent. Every night since, I’d found myself in it come bedtime. My shame knew no limits. And no, I still hadn’t quit. The words still hadn’t come even close to leaving my mouth.
He frowned. “No.”
“That I have some deep secret longing to feel close to you resulting in my stealing your shirt like some creepy perv?”
“Course I don’t fucking think that,” he replied crankily, reaching up to grip the top of the doorframe. All of his bulging muscles stretched the arms of his white T-shirt in the nicest way. It was all I could do not to start drooling, my heart beat taking up residence somewhere down between my thighs. And who could blame it? Not me. Maybe if I got laid, this would go away and things would return to normal. It’d seemed safer to avoid rubbing up against any men just in case I got carried away and started dating again. This new situation, however, changed everything.
“Well, of course not! That would be crazy.” And wasn’t that the god’s honest truth? Cray-zeee. Lock me up and throw away the key because it wasn’t like I didn’t know better.
“Just can’t figure out where the hell it could be.”
Angels couldn’t have smiled as innocently. They might have tried, but they would have failed, the dirty-mouthed, winged, little liars. “Jimmy, I don’t know where it is. But I’ll look around for it later, okay?”
“Yeah,” he said, and then added as an afterthought, “and stop looking at me weird.”
“I’m not!”

Seven years ago, Juan Martinez lost everything—his only parent, his home, his life as he’d known it. Alone, lost, and desperate, he turned to the Reyes Hispanos—the RH—one of the most violent gangs in South Texas. But when you sell your soul to the devil, you pay a heavy price. Convicted of a drive-by shooting, Juan has served hard time. Finally out on parole, he wants to disappear—from the RH, from memories of all that he’s lost, and especially from the gorgeous woman who just showed up next door.

Beth Garcia grew up following after her older brother, David, and his best friend, Juan. She always dreamed of a day when she’d be old enough for Juan to look at her as someone other than David’s little sister. But he disappeared at seventeen, after his mother was deported, and Beth thought she’d lost him forever. When she finds him living at the halfway house next door, she knows he’s still the same guy inside. Determined to save him from himself and the RH, Beth sets out to prove that he didn’t commit the crime he was convicted of. But the path to absolution is dark, and even Beth may not be able to discover the real Juan.

Can a man with a damaged soul and a beautiful heart let a woman with fierce loyalty and unwavering love risk it all to save him? Or will his past bury them both this time?

"You're killing me here, you know that, right?" I move a bit closer to her now, almost near enough to touch.

"Then stop fighting it," she whispers.

I take the last step, leaving only an inch between us, head to toe. I can see the shine on her sweet cherry lips, and smell the cinnamon in her hair. "It'll never work. I'll never be free, and I won't bury you with me."

She gazes up at me and there's so much trust in her eyes, so much faith and pure devotion, it literally steals my breath away. For a moment in time, everything stops. The birds in the trees, the cars rolling by on the street, the sun beating down on my skin. All of it just stops as if someone hit the pause button. I look into her eyes, and I can't fight it any more than I can fight the gravitational pull that keeps my feet on the ground.

My head tilts incrementally to one side, and lowers, bit by excruciating bit until her breath feathers across my face and my lips meet hers. I press against their softness, hearing the tiny gasp that she makes. The lipgloss is slick, and I can't help but think of all the other places on both her body and mine that I'd like to make slick. I feel my breathing ratchet up a few dozen notches as my mind goes to static. I haven't kissed a woman since the night before I went behind bars, and my engine is revving at full-throttle.

But Beth is special—beautiful and strong. If there is one thing I've learned working for the RH and living behind bars, it's how to control myself. When so much around you is out of control, you realize quickly that self-control is one of the best weapons you've got. As much as I want to press Beth up against the wall of the house right now and drive every part of me into every part of her, I don't. I stand stock still, hands fisted by my sides, and I gently, ever so softly, kiss her.

It's electrifying. Like someone just took a defibrillator to my poor shriveled lump of a heart. It surges to life and screams for freedom—freedom from the past, freedom from the sins, freedom to love this woman. I start to pull away, knowing that touching her more will only make the inevitable loss that much harder, but her hands snake up around my neck and against my lips she murmurs, "No."

"Beth," I gasp. "We can't."

She opens her eyes, lips millimeters from mine. Her long dark lashes sweep up and then down once, as she says, "Yes. We can."

Before I know what's happened we're together from knees to lips, her warm, giving curves molded against me in places that haven't felt this in so long they've forgotten just how amazing it can be.

I put my hands on her waist, willing myself to keep them there. Her fingers play with the short hairs at the nape of my neck, and even as my dick swells and turns hard as a rock, some kind of tension releases from her mouth to me as I stroke along her perfect white teeth. She tastes like the cherry lip gloss and I know that cherry candy will now be my favorite flavor until the day I die.

I can feel her nipples harden against my chest and I push my hard-on into her, desperate for relief. She groans and stands on her tiptoes, grinding her pelvis against me as she does.

My hands move up her sides, my thumbs finding the underneath of her breasts. If there were a form that was considered geometrically perfect, the curve of that sweet spot where her breasts meet her chest would be it. That curve should represent the most complex mathematical equation there is, and God, how I'd love to be the one man to solve it.
