Twosome Tuesday: Beats by Kendall Grey

Beats (Hard Rock Harlots, #2)

by Kendall Grey

Synopsis:

WARNING: BEATS is specially formulated for horn dogs, porn oglers, smut peddlers, BDSM junkies, M/M and M/M/F addicts, DP dabblers, and lovers of A2M backdoor sexy times. If you don't fall into these categories, can't stomach hot man-on-man action, or if you have no idea what the above acronyms mean, please back away from BEATS now. This isn't the book you're looking for. Failure to heed this warning could inadvertently throw unauthorized users into a persistent vegetative state, or at the very least, require administration of a defibrillator to the chest and/or groin area. Nobody wants that.

For months, shy drummer Jinx Hardwick has been silently crushing on her tall, dark, and scary bandmate, Toombs Badcock. Drawn to his frightening ink and scars, she yearns to uncover the shadowy secrets lurking behind his silver eyes, but Jinx is too intimidated to even look at him, let alone talk to him. When she stumbles upon Toombs and their manipulative lead guitarist Rax in a compromising position, Jinx realizes her chances of winning Toombs's heart aren't just a long shot-they're nonexistent. To make matters worse, Jinx's family needs her at home. She's about to back away from it all-Toombs, the band, her dreams of fame and fortune-when Rax makes her an offer she can't refuse: a no-holds-barred night alone with Toombs. There's one small catch. She has to go through Rax to get it.

Heather's Review
4.5 Pearly Smooches!

Toombs is both the bane of my existence and the reason I get out of my bunk every morning. He's an expert at unhinging me with little more than a glance. When he's around, I can't talk. Can't create. Can't even think.

Jinx is in love with Toombs. Toombs consumes her every thought. But, while he does seem to be into Jinx, he is completely in love with their band-mate Rax.

When you spend months with the same people in a cramped tour bus, you notice things. Sometimes they're things you wish you could forget. Like a glimpse through the crack in a bunk curtain of Rax's tattooed hand resting on Toombs's bare shoulder. And the soft glances volleying between them onstage, or their backs pressed to one another as they play searing duets. And the time I walked in on them masturbating each other on the couches in the front of the bus.

Jinx is suffering from writer's block. Her feelings for Toombs, her jealousy of Rax, and her family's money problems back home are taking a serious toll on her creativity. Jinx is not as free sexually as the rest of her band-mates are. Sex has only ever been part of a relationship for her. She is completely uncomfortable with being around Letty and Shade's very open relationship as well as Toombs and Rax's sexual expeditions with groupies. All of this, combined with her worry for her family have her depressed and on the verge of quitting the band and going back home.

Rax takes an interest in Jinx and propositions her for a threesome with him and Toombs. Jinx doesn't want Rax, but they are a packaged deal. The way to Toombs is through Rax. Can she completely break out of her shell and accept Rax just so she can have her heart's desire?

Letty, of course, being the queen of all things kinky, advises Jinx to go for it.

"I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. The way to a guy's heart is straight through his dick. Once you conquer the cock, his soul is a piece of pecan pie drizzled with cum, begging to be savored."

In getting involved with both men, she learns a lot about the dynamics of their relationship. Rax seems to have some hold over Toombs and Jinx doesn't like it at all. Lust, love, and hate collide in a night of epic sex.

Sandwiched between love and hate and their respective erections, I'm no longer in control of my body.

What is supposed to be just a night of sex turns into a huge mess. Everyone's libidos and feelings are all over the place. Secrets come out… Hearts are broken… Will the band survive another blow so soon?
Beats is not as "out there" as Strings. While you still get some of the brazenness from Letty and Rax; Jinx is more "normal." She is just a girl, in love with a boy. A boy, who is in love with someone else. In this case, the man she loves happens to be in love with another man. I can't imagine feeling like you have to share the man you love with someone else just to be with him; or the pain Jinx felt every time she saw Toombs look longingly at Rax, the way she looks at him. Being in her head, warring with herself on whether giving into her desires is right or wrong; on whether, or not she can live with the choices she has to make, is hard. I just want to give her a big hug and a shoulder she can cry on.

Once again Kendall has blown me away! Under all of the kink her books tell a great story. The characters are so complex and I can't help but love every one of them. I cannot wait to read Nocturnes(Hard Rock Harlots #3).

Selene's Review

5 Conquering Smooches!

Toombs is a rainbow of wrong, but the storm that precedes him is so damn right.

This book completely caught me off guard. I loved it.

Seriously. Loved. It.

Don't get me wrong, in a lot of ways it was completely over my head and outside of my comfort zone but it drew me in and would not let go. So much of what happens in this book is foreign to me (thank you Google), yet I found myself fascinated by and attached to these characters. Where Strings was a sexy, laugh a minute romp fest with a love story tucked inside, Beats is a seriously gritty love story with some sex thrown in to shake things up. And boy does it.

Can I just say how much I LOVE KG's writing? I think she's brilliant. I really do. She has a way with words that mesmerizes me … which is why this review is going to be full of quotes (sorry, I warned you).

Jinx is the drummer in Killer Buzz Float along with Letty, Shades, Rax, and Toombs. If you've read Strings (Hard Rock Harlots, #1), you no doubt know and love these characters! They are on the verge of hitting it big, having just landed a record deal, and are about to start working on the music for their first album after finishing up their tour. Jinx has too much clouding her head … she's got family troubles back home and boy trouble on the road … she's for sure in lust, maybe in love, with Toombs and can't get her head in the game.

Nothing changes the fact that I'm out of beats. For him. For the band. For myself.

While her creative juices may be running dry, her other juices (ew … I can't believe I just wrote that, LOL) are flowing just fine. Thanks to Master Manipulator Rax, Jinx finds herself in a little triangle with him and Toombs. Jinx struggles to understand the nature of Rax and Toombs' relationship and I'm right there with her!

"We come together. It's all or nothing with us." Toombs harsh expression softens by a hair.
A million questions flood my mind, but I only ask one. My audacity shocks me. "I know what Rax wants. But what does Toombs want?"
The moment stretches into an eternity of silence balance on the seesaw of our precarious stares.
"I do what Rax tells me to do."
"Because you can't think for yourself."
He angles closer. His pupils flare black.
"Because I belong to him."

The dynamics of the three personalities involved are nothing compared to the dynamics of each individual relationship (Rax/Toombs, Jinx/Toombs, Jinx/Rax, and Jinx/Toombs/Rax). Jinx finds herself in a power struggle with Rax for Toombs' affection. I found this aspect of the triangle particularly interesting considering Jinx is always so timid and non-confrontational. The fact that she stands up to Rax (especially during their threesome) had me all kinds of fired up!

I hate how submissive he is with Rax. I want to protect him. To whisk him away from Rax's influence. I want to prove to Toombs that I'm the one he needs.

I think the evolution I liked best though, is Jinx's. Her limits are tested in every way … physically, sexually, and emotionally. And here's where the quote overload happens!

With each ingress, a little part of my relative innocence dies while another part of me awakens. - Jinx

I'm consumed. By what, I don't know. A bizarre mixture of confusion, elation, fear, uncertainty, guilt, triumph, and loss of control … Whatever it is, this energy between us, these raging, perfectly matched heartbeats must mean something. - Jinx

Nothing about this scene is right, but at this point, I'm so full of wrong, I'll do whatever they want and ask myself for forgiveness later. -Jinx

Sex and craziness aside, here's what Beats boils down to for me …
Toombs and Jinx are two people struggling to find themselves, struggling to establish their own identity and finally do so when they find each other. And with that, I will leave you with my favorite lines from Beats (it's poetry people!).

"Sometimes the one you love introduces you to the person inside - the real one who you're so close to, you don't even recognize her. Sometimes the one you love knows you better than you know yourself. They bring out the best in us when we least expect it."

Nocturnes (Hard Rock Harlots, #3) will be Rax's story .... BRING IT!!!
