4.5 - give me Moore - Smooches

At his 43rd birthday party, surrounded by family and friends, Schooner Moore should be on top of the world.  He’s married to his gorgeous college sweet heart, he’s a rich and successful business man, and he’s still drop dead gorgeous.  He really should be on top of the world.

Catching up with his old college roommate at his party, HER name comes up.  Mia Silver.  Suddenly, Schooner is back in college and remembering the story of how he met and lost the love of his life.  The first half of SFM is Schooner recalling his freshman year of college and the summer after.   Even now, twenty-four years later, Schooner still has no idea why Mia left him and school with no explanation.  Even now, twenty-four years later, he’s still haunted by this great unknown.

Schooner connects with Mia on Facebook and upon learning the reason for her departure he immediately leaves his wife and sets out to discover “what could have been” with Mia.

I have to say I was taken back a bit by how much I LOVED this story.  I couldn’t put it down.  I have this strange love of stories about a second chance with a first love.  Couple that with excellent writing, lovable characters (especially Mia’s BFF Seth) and some good ol’ angst and you’ve got me wanting “moore!”

4.5 - my heart can't take much Moore - Smooches

Moore to Lose is the second book in the Needing Moore series.  Book 1, Searching for Moore, left me hanging in the worst possible way and Moore to Lose picks up right where book 1 left off.  Mia and her unborn child’s fates are revealed before the book cuts back to the past … taking us to Mia’s sophomore year of college, the year right after she left Schooner and moved back to New York.

The majority of the book follows Mia’s life from that time on until she reconnects with Schooner well into adulthood.  Mia’s journey was heartbreaking … in so many ways.  Even though she chose to walk away from Schooner, he was never far from her heart if not possessing it all together.  Over the years, Mia struggles to cope with the assault as well as Schooner’s betrayal.  She tries to get lost in different kinds of relationships (an affair with her college professor!) and experiences before seeking help to move past her, well, past.  Once Mia is healthy again, she meets Michael, the second great love of her life.

I loved the back story of Mia and Seth.  LOVED IT!  That was one of my favorite parts of the story.    There is a bit of overlap between SFM and MTL … the first time Mia and Schooner reconnect is told from Mia’s POV in SFM and then Schooner’s POV in Moore to Lose.  I loved knowing the story from both points of view!  We get a few glimpses of Schooner in the past as well.  Even though his life is very different from Mia’s … she is never far from his heart either.

When we return to the present, even though Mia and Schooner have found each other, their course is anything but smooth.  At the end of the book, we are left with yet another cliffhanger.  Julie is getting good at those!

Julie’s attention to detail is one thing I love about her writing.  I have absolutely no doubt that the football game she references on Thanksgiving Day 2000 was an actual matchup and the Cowboys did indeed win.  She’s just thorough like that.   I will admit that I’ve been truly surprised by this series ….  I’ve fallen in love with Mia and Schooner and a cast of supporting characters you can’t help but connect with.

4 - Moore than Enough - Smooches

“Your first and your last, Baby Girl.  Your first and your last.” - Schooner

Moore Than Forever is the third and final book in the Needing Moore series.
Moore Than Forever starts off right where Moore to Lose leaves us.  Mia is in labor in New York and Schooner is still in California.  She doesn’t call to let him know …. she is pissed and devastated that he has chosen to stay with CJ and Zac all this time.  One of their friends eventually realizes Schooner has no idea what is going on so he informs him of Nathaniel’s pending arrival.  Schooner arrives well after Nathaniel’s birth and Mia is, put simply, over it.  Vindictive BBC is in the house (don’t you just love Seth?) and there is a showdown to be had between Mia and Schooner.

I really don’t want to give anything else away.  Let me just say that Mia and Schooner’s ending will bring a smile to your face and your heart.  Moore Than Forever takes them places I never imagined … and I wouldn't dare spoil that for you.

As much as I love Mia and Schooner, I also love Mia and her best friend Seth’s relationship.  The humor, the love, the commitment … I want my own Seth Shapiro!!!  And I have to say that Seth eloquently and masterfully summed up the entire series -

“Here you are, about to marry your true love, a guy who came back for you because he was as broken without you as you were without him.  He stayed married to someone he didn’t love because he didn’t want to feel, and you almost drove yourself over the edge trying to feel, something, anything.  But I have to tell you, you two are not broken when you are together.”
